What is the main cause of chronic bronchitis?
Cigarette smoking is the main cause of chronic bronchitis. When the pollutants from a cigarette are breathed into the lungs, they irritate the airways and cause excessive mucus production. A common example is what some may call the "smoker’s cough." However, it is still possible to develop chronic bronchitis if you do not smoke. People who have been exposed for an extended duration to contaminants that irritate their lungs, like chemical fumes, dust, and other substances, can also develop this respiratory condition.
I think I may have chronic bronchitis. What tests can I get done to see if I have this condition?
Before tests, a physical examination, including a medical history questionnaire, may be conducted. Your doctor may ask you specific questions about your cough. For example:
- Are you coughing up mucus?
- Are you having trouble breathing?
- Does your chest feel tight?
- Do you smoke cigarettes?
- If so, how many cigarettes do you smoke each day?
- How many years have you been smoking?
- Have you been breathing in other things that can irritate your lungs?
Depending upon your responses to these questions, as well as the results of the physical exam, your physician may advise you to receive certain tests, to find out if your lungs have been damaged. Tests such as the pulmonary function test are used to see how well your lungs are working. Blood tests and a chest x-rays are also commonly used procedures.
I have chronic bronchitis. What can be I do to improve my breathing and reduce my coughing?
If you smoke, stop. If you’re having a difficult time quitting, don’t be afraid to ask your doctor for help. Stopping smoking will allow you to breath easier, and most importantly, will give your lungs an opportunity to heal. In addition, try to avoid agents that are considered irritants. These can include aerosols, like hairspray, spray deodorant, or paints. If you are currently employed in an occupation that requires exposure to irritants, wear a filtering mask.
However, Progressive Health recommends you first visit with your primary care physician to assess the severity of your bronchitis. He/she may want to prescribe you certain medicines, like bronchodilators, to treat your condition. Bronchodilators work to open, or dilate, the airways in your lungs and may help you breathe better. Also, be conscious of your diet. Studies have shown that persons with chronic bronchitis tend to be deficient in certain vitamins and minerals; therefore, nutritional supplementation may be extremely beneficial.
Can antibiotics help chronic bronchitis?
In general, antibiotics are not considered an effective treatment for chronic bronchitis. Antibiotics can be helpful if you get a lung infection along with your chronic bronchitis. Lung infections first present with an increase in the amount of mucus you cough up. Also, this mucus might be discolored; either yellow or dark green. Fever usually accompanies this type of infection. Finally, shortness of breath might get worse.
